Talks

Warwick Economics Society offers a fantastic opportunity for everyone at Warwick to hear some really exciting topics be discussed. Last year, the speaker series and debates were incredibly successful and this year we aim to continue to attract high calibre speakers, build on previous success and engage more people with the society.

World Class Speakers

We offer the fantastic opportunity to listen to high-profile speakers right here on campus. We have recently hosted speakers such as Sir Vince Cable, Dr Eamonn Butler and Ha-Joon Chang recently for talks on topics from Brexit to the Myth of the Knowledge Economy. As well as the chance to watch speeches from these leading figures and experts, there is the opportunity to interact with them through Question and Answer sessions and smaller, more intimate seminar style events.

The society also works closely the Warwick Economics Department who this year ran an incredibly successful 360 Lecture Series where academics, professionals and students could engage with policy makers, practitioners and influential decision-makers. Last year, Vinay Gupta (Co-founder of Ethereum), Andy Haldane (Bank of England Chief Economist) and Dr Mike Walker (Chief Economist, Competition Market Authority) all came to speak to staff and students.

The Economics Debate

Warwick Economics Society also sends a team to the prestigious Institute of Economic Affairs’ competition ‘The Economics Debate’. A select number of Economics Societies from across the UK get the opportunity to participate in the esteemed debating competition covering topical economic issues and ideas.

Last year, teams from Bath, Bristol, Cambridge, Edinburgh, LSE, Oxford, UCL and Warwick competed for cash prizes, summer internship places at the IEA and fast tracks through the Summer Internship application process at Oxera Consulting! Judges included The Telegraph’s Juliet Samuel, the IEA’s Head of Education, Dr Steve Davies, and Managing Director at Oxera Consulting Dr Helen Jenkins. There was also a drinks reception and invaluable networking opportunities. We are glad to announce that our team won in 2017-18, and we hope to continue our success in this exciting event in the coming year.
